La Musique Magnifique!

Just got back from France, got loads of new tunes for you. Quite a few to get through, but this little pop ditty brings a smile to your face. It's got that kitsch french pop vibe going on even though they sing in English. The Sophia Lorenians are from Paris/NewYork, so far they have only released this on 7" Single.

Loving this album and this tune in particular. Sound like old skool funk put through an old gramophone and recorded down a crackley phoneline. Wah Wah!

Take a trip down Ambivalence Avenue!

DISKO, DISKO PARTIZANI!

Balkan brass, accordions and a ska skanking beat. Keeping on the balkan tip, this one gets your toes tapping. The rest of Shantels latest album is all quality balkan brass band music. I have a few versions of this old tune, Shantel brings it back up to date without losing the energy of the original standard.

Skank on…!

Banging away at 100mph, this is the maddest tune of the month. I love an accordion! This tune takes a few listens to really get it, a bit like the crazy instrumentals by Tom Waits. This track is from their latest album - Délivrance.

A Hawk and a Hacksaw is a folk band from Albuquerque, New Mexico. The band consists primarily of percussionist Jeremy Barnes, (drummer for Neutral Milk Hotel), and violinist Heather Trost. Inspired by eastern European, particularly Balkan traditions there is rarely a dull moment on any of their albums.  If you like Beirut, then dig further in to the world of A Hawk And A Hacksaw.

The name comes from a line in Hamlet (Act II, scene ii): "I am but mad north-north-west: when the wind is southerly I know a hawk from a handsaw."

Phantom legs and Blinking Pigs, Haunting me, My long lost love and the memories of You.

Bizarre kooky lyrics for a bright and breezy electropop song. Taken from the Swedish band's charming 2nd album Machine Dreams. RECOMMENED!

Little Dragon is a band, based in Gothenburg, Sweden. Consisting of Swedish-Japanese singer Yukimi Nagano (vocals, percussion) and her close high-school friends Erik Bodin (drums), Fredrik Källgren Wallin (bass), and Håkan Wirenstrand (keyboards).

Swedish electronic jazz duo Koop's albums Waltz for Koop and Koop Islands feature Yukimi Nagano's vocals on several tracks.

Psychedelic swirling rhythms on a hot sunny day.

Over the top squelches and a continuous looping riff sucks you in to the kaleidoscopic chasm of Neon Indian. Expect big things from Neon Indian, from Brookyln/Austin, Texas. New album Psychic Chasms available from 13 October.

Great cover artwork too!

A burst indie pop to keep the sun shining

Nice summery vibe, twanging little riff that loops around your head and doesn't let go. Two Door Cinema Club are 3 people from Northern Ireland with the help of technology and a thirst for anything quirky.

Infectious hypnotic groove

I can't stop listening to this tune, it's so incredibly catchy it's off the hook! Featuring guest vocals by Alexis Taylor of Hot Chip. Last month I posted up Cruel Intentions SMD's collaboration with Beth Ditto, the whole album is brilliant mix of vocal talent. Get it!

More chilled out Scandinavian grooves.

Subtle acoustic guitars, pan pipes, hand claps, sprinkles of delicate percussion and Victoria's quietly captivating voice.

Taken By Trees is the solo project of Swedish singer songwriter Victoria Bergsman, best known for providing guest vocals for the smash hit Peter Bjorn and John single Young Folks

Victoria Bergsman was singer of the indie pop band The Concretes from 1995 up until her 2006 departure. Since announcing her leaving the band in July 2006, she has been recording for her new solo project, Taken by Trees.

Madder than the wicked witch of the west!

Considered to be a bit of nuttier Yoko Ono made some pretty quirky tunes in her time, She has a new album out this month Between My Head and the Sky. This track taken from the album Yes, I'm a Witch, a remix album by Yoko Ono released on February 6, 2007. Artists invited to contribute were asked to select a song from Ono's back catalogue, and were then presented with all the necessary elements to create a remix/cover to their desires. According to the press release, nearly every artist chose only the vocals, and created entirely new backing tracks to demonstrate the versatility of Ono's compositions. Love this track, wicked baseline and crazy lyrics!

Folktronica acoustic melodies from the excellent Norwegian duo of Erlend Øye and Eirik Bøe.

It's been five years since their last album, we've had the brilliant side project of Erlend Øye's The Whitest Boy Alive and his numerous guest appearances to keep us happy. But I'm very excited about their new (3rd) album, Declaration of Dependence, due October 20th. This single sets us up in anticipation of what's to follow. I've been a big fan of their intricate and subtle guitar melodies since their debut album back in 2001. This song doesn't disappoint, an instant foot tapper with sing-a-long chorus which has become the trademark sound of Kings of Convenience.

Kings of Convenience is an indie folk-pop duo from Bergen, Norway.

Can you dig it!

Beyond the wizards Sleeve should have some new tunes out very soon. In the mean time we'll have to keep playing their debut (Ark 1) to death. I can't get enough of them. Very hard to get hold of nowadays, this is a great companion for the Meanderthals Desire Lines album. Also check out the Re-Animations Vol.1 B.T.W.S excellent remix compilation.

Hang on to the summer, i've got some sunshine tunes left!

Have a listen to this version of Claudine Longet's Ain't no mountain high enough, it's a typical kitch arrangement made in 1971 of the Motown standard. An uplifting summer sizzler with added Français beat.

This tune sounds like it is a recent recording, taken from the debut album Cold Fact by Sixto Diaz Rodriguez. But it was recorded in 1970, lost in obscurity until recent years. Sugarman, considered to be Rodriguez's signature tune was added to DJ David Holmes' mix album Come Get It I Got It back in 2002 creating a new buzz for the artist and his debut.

Sixto Diaz Rodriguez is an American folk musician, born in Detroit, Michigan on July 10, 1942.

I read the news today oh boy!

I think some Beatles tunes you just can't fuck with, and A Day In The Life is one of them. But my main man Big Twix (@bigtwix) played this and I loved it, something about Reggae that makes you get away with it. As Big Twix sez 'you can hear the love when they made this'. The whole album is a reggae version of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Dub Band by the same lot that done the dub side of the moon and Radiodread, featuring many top draw reggae artists.

I've been listening to the new album from the The XX quite a bit, well worth checking out. But this old cover version of the classic Womack and Womack tune is an amazing version. I love the original, but this version is a different tune entirely. Class!
